Road works permit scheme announced for Yorkshire

Date: 22/3/2012
The government has launched a new road works permit scheme in Yorkshire. This is the fifth initiative of its kind in the UK and it will give local councils more power over road works in their area.
From now on, companies planning to dig up routes will need to apply for a permit in advance and agree on a timescale for the initiative.
They will also have to ensure there is enough space available for road users while the work is being carried out and if they do not adhere to the conditions of the permit, they will be issued with a fine.
Transport Minister Norman Baker said: "We are determined to tackle problem road works and make sure that those who dig up the road are made accountable when disruption occurs."
He added although disruption to transport systems is sometimes unavoidable due to construction, it can cost businesses time and money, so the issue needs to be addressed.
A similar scheme was recently launched in the capital and from June, Transport for London will be able to charge firms up to £2,500 a day if they want to dig up roads during busy periods.
