Road casualty reduction targets 'should be changed'

Date: 1/3/2010
The government's road casualty reduction targets for this year have already been met, a new report has stated.According to research from the parliamentary group Pacts, the casualty reduction rate varies across Britain.
It suggested more should be done to understand regional similarities and differences in order to focus on effective delivery of road safety.
The report also found that men aged between 20 and 40 are six times more likely to die on the roads than women.
It also found there has been a 50 per cent cut in the number of child casualties up to the age of 16.
The report suggested that due to the variation in road safety according to region, road safety targets must take this factor into account.
It also stated that the reductions in collisions in 2008 were just below average in rural areas such as Avon, Cornwall and North Yorkshire.
