Romsey bridge works set to improve rail freight transport

Romsey bridge works set to improve rail freight transport

Date: 27/2/2012

Network Rail is undertaking a bridge construction project to improve rail freight transport in Hampshire.

The bridge in Romsey that carries the A27 over the rail tracks is being replaced so that larger goods containers can pass underneath it.

It is thought the work will take three months to complete and the scheme will get underway on March 31st.

Network Rail's Route Managing Director for Wessex Richard O'Brien said: "We have worked with the councils, police, emergency services and community representatives to keep disruption to a minimum while we carry out this work that will ultimately benefit the local economy."

The organisation noted thousands of businesses in the UK rely on the rail freight infrastructure for good deliveries, so it is important the scheme is carried out quickly and as economically as possible.

Engineers are also working to renew waybeams on the Huttons Ambo rail bridge in north Yorkshire and the majority of improvements will not disrupt train services.
