RoSPA announces advice for travelling in the dark

Date: 26/10/2011
Travelling in the dark is an important thing to consider with the winter months creeping in and the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents has issued advice on how to deal with it.Commuters and children will be travelling home after sunset, once British Summer Time ends on Sunday (October 30th).
If travelling in an environmentally friendly way, make sure you are visible as you cycle or walk home. Cyclists in particular, must, by law, have front and rear lights attached to their bike, as well as reflectors. It's also advisable to ensure your outfit is brightly coloured or fluorescent and use of reflective accessories is advised once it has turned dark.
Drivers and motorists should be extra vigilant when it comes to looking for "vulnerable road users", especially as the most frequently-reported factor in accidents on Britain's roads is failing to look carefully.
Motorists also need to take into account their speed, especially around residential areas or schools, where there may be a higher number of pedestrians on the roads.
