RoSPA gives EU road safety policy the thumbs up

Date: 21/7/2010

New plans to improve road safety across the European Union have been welcomed by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA).

A number of measures have been outlined in the European Road Safety Policy Orientations for 2011-20, including developing intelligent vehicles, better enforcement and building safer roads.

According to figures from the European Commission report, the UK had the lowest number of road fatalities by population in both 2001 and 2009.

The organisation did, however, note the UK should not become complacent when it comes to the issue of road safety.

Head of Road Safety at RoSPA Kevin Clinton said states can learn from each other and moving forward together is a positive step.

"Given its position as a road safety leader, the UK can share a lot from its experience, but we must remember that there are important lessons for us too," he added.

Nigel Davies from Auto Windscreens recently advised motorists planning to drive abroad to make sure they find out about their destination's rules and regulations on driving.
