RoSPA praises Scottish road safety efforts

Date: 23/6/2010
Efforts to reduce the number of people injured on Scottish roads have been commended by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA).Government figures showed the total number of casualties is at the lowest level in 60 years, with last year seeing a 20 per cent reduction in fatal injuries, compared to 2008.
Serious injuries also declined from 2,570 to fewer than 2,270 and Road Safety Officer for RoSPA Scotland Kathleen Braidwood suggested the figures reflect the success of various organisations working together.
"Road safety is everyone's responsibility and I hope that the current momentum continues so we can prevent even more needless suffering in future years," she said.
However, an increase in the number of cyclists who were injured on the roads in Scotland was described as disappointing.
London Mayor Boris Johnson recently welcomed statistics relating to the English capital, which also showed a decline in road injuries in 2009.
