School transport cuts 'could hit Sunderland parents'

Date: 13/3/2013
Potential cuts to discretionary school transport spending in Sunderland could leave parents having to foot extra travel costs for their children, the Sunderland Echo reports. While almost all of Sunderland City Council's £2.2 million transport budget for the 2012/2013 school year is dedicated to statutory provision, it could save an estimated £200,000 by making cutbacks in the area of expenditure that is at its discretion.
Members of the Council are set to discuss plans today (March 15th) as the possibility of a full review is considered, with pupils at six Wearside schools set to be affected by any changes.
"Discretionary transport is currently provided to three schools within the city of Sunderland," a report fo the Cabinet said.
"In addition, discretionary transport arrangements are also in place for some children attending denominational secondary schools."
By reviewing free minibuses and reassessing free travel permits, the fear is that the Council will pass extra transport costs onto the City's parents.
