SCOOT - TRL's urban traffic control system - has been named as the most transformative network management tool of the past two and a half decades in the TRAFFEX 25th anniversary poll.Bill Butler, TRAFFEX Event Director, announced the accolade at the exhibition, which took place at Birmingham NEC between March 29th and 31st.

Since its first incarnation, the software has developed significantly, adding features such as providing priority to public transport and pedestrians at busy junctions.
At TRAFFEX, it was revealed that the latest version of the tool - SCOOT MMX - has been launched and incorporates functionality such as reduced cycle time during quiet periods, variable invitation to cross for pedestrians and cycle time sub-region independence.
Dennis Robertson, the man behind the concept for SCOOT and TRANSYT, was also honoured at the event, receiving an award for a significant contribution by an individual.
Gavin Jackman, Head of Traffic and Software, stated: "SCOOT has deservedly been recognised as a fantastic network management tool. It is a credit to TRL's software team, and in particular Dave Bretherton and his colleagues, that SCOOT has gone from strength to strength."
