Scotland safety initiatives receive awards

Date: 29/10/2010
The Prince Michael International Road Safety Awards 2010 has honoured Road Safety Scotland (RSS) and the Association of Chief Police Officers in Scotland (ACPOS).Having worked for 25 years to reduce the number of risks faced by motorists in the country, RSS received a special accolade for its service towards transport safety over the period.
ACPOS also picked up a gong for its work in helping to decrease the number of people driving after consuming alcohol around Christmas 2009 by 25 per cent, through a successful anti-drink driving campaign.
Chief constable Kevin Smith, head of ACPOS road policing, said: "The forfeiture initiative shows this type of behaviour will not be tolerated. My message is clear; driving under the influence of drink or drugs is irresponsible and risks lives."
A course for 14 to 16-year-olds, developed by the Driving Standards Agency and Scottish Qualifications Authority, also recently received a Prince Michael International Road Safety Award.
