Scottish cyclists in Pedal on Parliament campaign

Date: 20/5/2013
Thousands of cyclists in Scotland rode in unison to the country's Holyrood Parliament over the weekend, calling for a larger proportion of the Government's transport budget to be spent on cycling as part of the Pedal on Parliament campaign. After holding a minute's silence to remember those who have lost their lives on the nation's roads, the demonstrators then made their way through the centre of Edinburgh in a bid to attract attention to their cause.
The group has the backing of Olympic gold medallist Sir Chris Hoy, and wants five per cent of Scotland's transport budget to be dedicated to improving safety for cyclists and implementing more suitable road traffic laws.
Former racing cyclist Graeme Obree led the ride, and addressed the crowd as he made the case for the Pedal on Parliament initiative.
"I came here to enlighten our politicians that we're not asking for spending here, but an investment, where young people can cycle freely and without fear," he said.
"If you can spend £800 million in one city on a tram, then you can find £100 million for cycling."
