Scottish roads show signs of improvement following assessment

Date: 15/3/2013

Despite more than one in three Scottish roads being labelled as sub-standard, the backlog of repairs appears to have stopped growing.

As the Scotsman reports, an official annual check carried out on non-trunk roads revealed that 36.2 per cent were in poor condition, with those in rural council areas in a worse state than a year ago.

However, despite the figures, there has been an overall improvement across council-maintained roads of 0.2 per cent over the last year, with all but the most minor roads in a better state than they were at the time of the last check.

Ewan Wallace, Chairman of the Society of Chief Officers of Transportation in Scotland - the organisation which carried out the survey - said: “The latest road condition indicator is slightly improved and this continues a trend reported last year. There is growing optimism that a decline over many years has been stemmed.”

They survey analysed all roads with the exception of motorways and trunk roads such as the A1 and A9, as these are the responsibility of Transport Scotland.
