Severn Bridge crossing 'to accept debit and credit cards'

Date: 29/1/2010
Steps are being taken to pave the way for motorists to be able to use debit and credit cards at pay tolls on the Severn Bridges, it has been reported. At present, drivers must pay in cash or using an electronic device that scanned at toll booths.
Deputy first minister Ieuan Wyn Jones stated it is likely debit and credit cards will be in use on the bridge by the end of the year.
He called the move an "excellent innovation".
However, before the change can be made, UK legislation must be amended to enable card payments as they are not currently permitted.
A spokesperson for the Department of Transport stated the initial stages of the change had been made but that the amendment had yet to reach the final stages.
Motorists entering Wales currently face a fee of £5.50 for cars and £16.40 for lorries.
According to the Press Association, it has been a long-running complaint that cards are not accepted on the M48 Severn bridge or M4 second crossing.
