Severn Crossing payment methods to be extended

Date: 26/2/2010
Legislation is likely to be changed to allow motorists to pay for use of the Severn Crossing by credit or debit card.At present, just cash or prepaid electronic payments are accepted as payment methods at the toll.
However, today (February 26th) transport minister Sadiq Khan laid plans before parliament proposing a change to the payment scheme.
It is hoped the new regulations will come into operation on March 19th.
Once they are in place, a card system operation will be arranged by the Severn River Crossing Plc and the Highways Agency.
Mr Khan commented: "Crossing users have made clear they want the convenience of making card payments and we have listened."
He added that he had urged the Severn River Crossing Plc and the Highways Agency to introduce the alternative payment arrangements as soon as possible so that motorists have access to better choice.
The toll currently stands at £5.50 for a car or small vehicle and £16.40 for a goods vehicle.
