Shanghai Government 'to continue public transport improvements'

Shanghai Government 'to continue public transport improvements'

Date: 21/2/2013

The Shanghai Government has revealed it will continue work on improving public transport infrastructure in the city as part of attempts to ease traffic congestion.

As the Shanghai Daily reports, plans involve the introduction of more bus-only lanes and further expansion of the Metro network in order to cope with increasing passenger demand. More parking spaces will also be added to cater for residents and visitors.

"Shanghai's public transport network will see an upgrade with three new subway lines or extensions going into service this year," said Qin Yun, Chief Engineer of the Shanghai Transport and Construction Commission.

Despite a growing number of people using the city's subway links, an increase in private car ownership has meant that vehicle traffic has not seen any substantial improvement in recent years.

The Commission explained that it will look to encourage more residents to take the bus to and from work as it continues to enhance the city's public transport infrastructure.
