Sheffield welcomes 21 green buses

Date: 29/9/2011
Stagecoach Yorkshire has taken delivery of 21 green buses as it promotes a more environmentally-friendly approach to transport. It is part of its Greener Journeys campaign and the hybrid double-decker vehicles will use 20,000 gallons less of petrol over the course of a year.
They are the first buses of this type to be rolled out in South Yorkshire and will operate on the 120 service.
Paul Lynch, Stagecoach Yorkshire's Managing Director, noted that he was very "proud" to be able to introduce this means of transport.
"[They] will provide customers with the same safe and reliable service, but also cut carbon emissions and show our commitment to attracting non-bus users to public transport," he added.
The money for the purchase has been provided by Stagecoach (£4 million) and the Government's Green Bus Fund (£2 million).
Yorkshire is not the only area to benefit from this reserve, as Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive secured over £5 million to buy 88 new green buses.
