'Simple steps' can improve fuel economy

'Simple steps' can improve fuel economy

Date: 17/11/2011

There are some easy steps motorists in the UK can take if they want to reduce the cost of driving, the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has claimed.

The organisation noted individuals can reduce carbon emissions and improve the miles they travel per gallon of fuel by changing their driving technique.

As well as clearing their vehicle of unnecessary weight such as roof racks and heavy items, individuals should attempt to change up through their gears earlier.

It is also important for drivers to anticipate the road ahead and keep a safe distance from other vehicles, as this will reduce the need for constant stopping and starting or heavy braking.

Chief Examiner at the IAM Peter Rodger said: "The way you drive has a big impact on the amount of fuel you use."

He added that people could improve their miles per gallon by 15 per cent by making small changes.

This comes after the organisation called on the government to trial the introduction of an 80mph motorway speed limit to ensure it is safe for road users.
