Smaller firms 'must be prepared for LEZ'

Smaller firms 'must be prepared for LEZ'

Date: 3/1/2012

The introduction of the new Low Emission Zone (LEZ) in London could cause problems for many smaller organisations, it has been claimed.

Head of Policy for London at the Freight Transport Association (FTA) Natalie Chapman acknowledged that the majority of larger heavy goods vehicle operators will already be prepared for the changes.

From today (January 3rd), lorries, buses and other larger vehicles will require Euro 4 standard engines if they wish to travel within certain parts of the capital without paying a charge.

This covers the majority of Greater London, although the M25 is not included.

However, Ms Chapman claimed tradespeople operating vans that are more than ten years old may not be ready for the alterations.

"For many small businesses and sole traders, 2011 has been all about keeping afloat and the looming LEZ changes may catch them out," she added.

Ms Chapman claimed the FTA is concerned about the situation, especially as the penalties mean "non-compliance is simply not an option."
