SMMT to host annual International Automotive Summit

SMMT to host annual International Automotive Summit

Date: 6/6/2012

Leaders within the automotive sector will gather for an event hosted by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) next week.

The organisation's annual International Automotive Summit will take place in Canary Wharf on June 12th and professionals will gather together to discuss the issues currently affecting the industry, as well as those that are likely to have an effect in the future.

It will be divided into three different sectors, each of which will focus on a different area. The first is called 'The changing face of vehicle retail' and will be supported by GForces Web Management.

This will discuss how the development of the internet is affecting various aspects of everyday life, which includes buying a car. Leading opinion formers from Google and LinkedIn will speak at the event, while Chief Executive Officer from franchised dealer group HR Owen Joe Doyle will discuss the matter from a retailer's point of view.

The second of the sections will be called 'Innovation in ultra-low carbon technology' and will focus on how developments are supporting the creation of eco-friendly motors.

Several senior industry representatives will contribute to the discussion, while Tony Harper of Jaguar Land Rover and representative of the Automotive Council Technology Group will speak about how this is significant for the UK in particular.

It will be sponsored by EDF Energy and Manager of B2C Product Development at the enterprise Bethan Carver said: "The electrification of transport will require the development of innovative technologies to enable motorists to maximise the cost and carbon saving potential of plug-in vehicles."

Finally, the third section of the SMMT event will be called 'Growth in the supply chain' and will consider the challenges of skills training in the automotive sector and how talent can be attracted into the industry.

The SMMT works to promote the interests of the British motor industry both in the UK and abroad, while acting as a voice for the sector. The industry generates a turnover of around £49 billion and is considered a vital part of the country's economy.
