SMMT releases tenth annual sustainability report

Date: 15/10/2009

Some of the cleanest and most efficient cars in Europe are in the UK.

That is according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), which has just released its tenth annual sustainability report.

The report concluded that CO2 emissions per vehicle in the UK have been cut by over 40 per cent in the last decade and energy use per vehicle has fallen by a quarter.

Paul Everitt, SMMT chief executive, said: "I am proud of the achievements industry has made during the last decade and the way it has responded to the unprecedented challenges of the recession.

"The transition to a low-carbon economy through investment and demonstration of ultra-low-carbon technologies is crucial to our future."

Water usage per vehicle has fallen by 45.3 per cent in the last decade, 40 per cent better than the European average.

Earlier this month the SMMT welcomed news that the government was extending the car scrappage scheme until February.
