Paul Everitt, SMMT chief executive, said: "I am proud of the achievements industry has made during the last decade and the way it has responded to the unprecedented challenges of the recession.
"The transition to a low-carbon economy through investment and demonstration of ultra-low-carbon technologies is crucial to our future."
Water usage per vehicle has fallen by 45.3 per cent in the last decade, 40 per cent better than the European average.
Earlier this month the SMMT welcomed news that the government was extending the car scrappage scheme until February.
