Snow and fog 'cause road accidents'

Date: 28/11/2011
Wintry weather can be the cause of many road accidents during the colder months, drivers have been warned. The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) and Jet Service Stations pointed out motorists can have their vision impaired by conditions such as fog, snow, sleet and rain.
In 2010, this contributed to 2,328 incidents that resulted in a high number of casualties.
To try and combat the problem, the organisations have launched a booklet to encourage safer driving as winter arrives.
IAM Chief Examiner Peter Rodger said: "When the weather is bad, firstly you need to ask yourself do you really need to travel at all?"
He said if journeys are essential, sufficient preparations must be made in advance if individuals want to stay safe.
Fitting winter tyres is one step drivers could take to ensure their vehicle is well equipped for severe weather conditions.
Head of Training at IAM Drive & Survive Simon Elstow also discussed winter driving recently and encouraged motorists to check their lights are working correctly in case of foggy weather.
