South London 'one step closer' to Tube extension

Date: 1/5/2013
South London could be set to benefit from an extension of the Northern Line after (TfL) Transport for London submitted a Transport and Works Act Order application to the Government.Under the proposals, the Tube line would be extended to Battersea from Kennington via Nine Elms, cutting journey times between Battersea and the West End to 15 minutes.
If the Government gives the scheme the green light, TfL are hoping to begin construction work in 2015 with a view to opening two new stations in 2020.
Michele Dix, Managing Director of Planning for TfL, explained that the project has widespread popular support and would bring a range of benefits to Battersea.
"Extensive public consultation has shown that the majority of local residents and businesses are behind this proposed Tube extension, which will create access to the Underground for thousands of people," she said.
With the new infrastructure expected to support 25,000 jobs and as many as 16,000 new homes, the strain placed on Vauxhall station would also be reduced if the initiative gets the go ahead.
