Speed awareness scheme launched by West Midlands Police

Date: 9/6/2010
West Midlands Police have launched an initiative to improve road safety and cut the number of deaths.Speed awareness courses will come into effect this summer, which will mean motorists caught speeding will get the option to go back to the classroom rather than get three points.
Inspector Mick Hartill said road safety is a priority and the force is committed to reducing the number of injuries and fatalities caused by road traffic collisions.
"Excessive speed is a factor in a large number of road traffic collisions. However, we do appreciate that some drivers may suffer a lapse of attention rather than deliberately breaking the law," he remarked.
He added the new measures are being bought in so motorists can be educated rather than penalised.
Instructors from the TTC Group will run the courses and individuals will learn driving safety tips, speeding consequences and hazard awareness.
Last month, North Yorkshire Police took part in a Europe-wide speed control operation, which revealed 365 motorists were caught speeding in the region in April.
