Speed bumps 'have no effect on drivers'

Speed bumps 'have no effect on drivers'

Date: 16/8/2010

Drivers are still driving fast past a school in Bingley despite a £52,000 road safety initiative, one resident has asserted.

According to the Bradford Telegraph and Argus, speed bumps are being built near Eldwick Primary School in the village of Gilstead after a three-year campaign to reduce road dangers in the area.

Furthermore, a 20mph speed limit will be enforced on a stretch of road through the village.

But Anne Jarvis, secretary of the Gilstead Village Society, which started a petition for the project in 2007, said road users' response to the measures has been disappointing.

"The traffic is just driving around the speed cushions at the same speed as it was before … it doesn't look like there is any intention of them slowing down to 20mph," she remarked.

Earlier this month, a report from Diamond, the women's car insurance provider, found housewives are 11 per cent more likely to break speed limits than other females.
