Speed cameras 'save lives and money'

Date: 3/9/2010
Speed cameras save lives, a police chief has claimed, after newly-released figures show the devices have cut the number of serious accidents on the roads in Cambridgeshire.According to the Cambridge News, Cambridgeshire Chief Constable Julie Spence announced average speed camera checks on the A14 have reduced the proportion of fatalities and serious injuries by 68 per cent.
In the county overall, the safety devices have resulted in a fall of 23 per cent in deaths and major injuries.
Ms Spence said: "It is clear that safety cameras save lives and save millions of pounds of taxpayers' money."
She added she finds it extremely irritating when people say speed cameras are just a tax.
Over 300 motorists are caught exceeding speed limits each day in Cambridgeshire.
The Hartlepool Mail recently reported Ken Cook, Acting Chief Inspector of Durham Police, described driving too fast as one of the major causes of serious and fatal incidents.
