Speed cameras to be switched on again

Speed cameras to be switched on again

Date: 3/11/2010

The decision to reinstate speed cameras in Oxfordshire has been welcomed by a safety group.

RoadSafe applauded Oxfordshire County Council for announcing plans to switch the region's fixed and mobile safety cameras back on during a local authority meeting yesterday (November 2nd).

The devices were turned off at the beginning of August this year because of funding difficulties.

Adrian Walsh, Director of RoadSafe, commented: "The news that safety cameras will be turned back on is excellent for all law-abiding drivers."

He said the machines are "a useful and effective tool for enforcing laws that help keep all road users safe".

The organisation referred to the results of a study conducted by the Safer Roads Partnership last month, which concluded speed cameras reduce the number of collisions on UK roads.

Also in October, a scheme that used average speed enforcement cameras along a stretch of the A14 to cut the number of deaths and serious injuries by 68 per cent was honoured with a Prince Michael International Road Safety Award.
