Stirling police focus on road safety

Date: 30/12/2010

Several motorists in the Stirling area have been caught allegedly drink-driving during the first month of the local police force's winter road safety initiative.

The Stirling Observer reports that as a result, Central Scotland Police have warned they will continue to take a zero-tolerance approach to people drinking and then getting behind the wheel, or any other motoring offences.

Chief Inspector Donald McMillan, head of the force's road policing unit, said that 30 people were also detected to have consumed alcohol and then hit the roads during the same period last year and that this was "not acceptable".

"The morning after the night before is also a dangerous time for people to drive as many may believe they are not over the limit, when in fact they are," he warned.

Other elements of the campaign include reminding drivers to wear a seatbelt and not exceed the speed limit or use a mobile phone while in control of a vehicle.

Portsmouth police have also been cracking down on drink-driving, according to local publication The News, with officers carrying out spot checks on passing motorists before Christmas.
