Stobart group relaunches eco-friendly rail freight service

Date: 13/12/2011
Stobart Group has reintroduced its low-carbon rail freight service connecting Spain and the UK.The service runs from Valencia to Barking, near London, and carries chilled fruit and vegetables from the Mediterranean country to British retailers.
It lowers the need for as many cross-continent truck journeys, thus reducing both vehicle emissions and road congestion in Spain, France and the UK.
Part-funded by a European Union Marco Polo grant aimed at moving freight transport from road to rail in Europe, the journey takes just over 50 hours to complete and the produce is tracked using satellite software.
Managing Director of Stobart Rail Freight Liam Martin said: "The service will allow us to offer a cost and time-effective solution for supermarkets and food retailers in a carbon-friendly manner."
Earlier this year, Eddie Stobart was awarded the best health and safety achievement in transport and logistics at the SHP IOSH Awards for its Stop, Think, Act campaign.
