Date: 26/9/2011
Companies in Stoke-on-Trent are being urged by the City Council to encourage their staff to adopt sustainable travel practices.Businesses have been told they can bid for grants worth up to £5,000 to help them launch green travel initiatives.
Stoke-on-Trent City Council revealed some suggestions as to what the money could be spent on, including buying pool bikes and providing secure cycle storage facilities, building shower and changing facilities and improving the quality of pedestrian crossings.
Small and medium-sized firms are being encouraged to create sustainable travel projects that are specifically catered for their requirements.
However, Cabinet Member for Transport and Planning Councillor Adrian Knapper said it was the responsibility of companies "to come up with something that will provide their employees with alternatives to just driving into work on their own, by creating facilities and opportunities they might not be able to afford normally."
The City Council promotes a number of sustainable travel options on its website, including cycling, with approximately 150 km of cycle routes located across Stoke-on-Trent.
