Street-corner parking 'endangers lives'

Street-corner parking 'endangers lives'

Date: 6/9/2010

A councillor has called for action on what he terms the "dangerous" practice of parking on street corners.

Speaking to the South Wales Echo, Ramesh Patel said those who leave their cars on corners in order to avoid fines for using residents-only bays are putting lives at risk.

The trend is particularly prevalent in the Canton area of Cardiff, he claimed, as many people park on the area's residential streets when attending football matches.

"Someone is going to get seriously injured or killed because people can't see around the parked cars when they are trying to pull out of junctions," Mr Patel commented.

He added the council needs to take action so that parking restrictions are administered in these "dangerous" locations.

A spokeswoman for South Wales Police said cars left on street corners are considered to be unsafe and the force has made the issue a priority.

Mr Patel's comments come after the BBC reported Gloucestershire Council and Gloucestershire Police have launched a crackdown on illegal parking as they believe it causes congestion and road safety problems.
