Summer drink-driving 'should be avoided'

Summer drink-driving 'should be avoided'

Date: 2/6/2011

As police forces across the country prepare for their annual clampdown on summer drink-driving, vehicle owners are being urged to keep road safety in mind.

The Institute of Advanced Motorists' (IAM) Chief Examiner Peter Rodger notes that people may have the best of intentions when they use their car to get to a seasonal event such as a barbecue, but by having an alcoholic beverage while there, they are putting themselves at risk.

If they are involved in a collision, he warns motorists that they should expect to face a breathalyser test regardless of whether they are at fault for the incident or not.

Mr Rodger also notes that drivers should be wary if planning to get behind the wheel the day after drinking as they could still be over the legal limit.

And even if they have not touched a drop, he urges road users to watch out for any pedestrians who may not be paying the usual care and attention to where they are going as a result of consuming alcohol.

"Everyone is very aware of the risks of drink-driving during the Christmas party season, but drink-drive casualties actually reach a peak in the summer," the expert notes.

Mr Rodger offers advice for vehicle owners on a weekly basis as part of the charity's efforts to improve road safety and driving skills.
