Supermarket petrol price cut welcomed

Date: 17/8/2011
Several of the largest retailers in the UK have cut their petrol prices in recent days.According to media reports, Tesco and Morrisons have both made the decision to reduce the amount consumers pay at the pump by 2p a litre, with Asda likely to do the same.
The Road Haulage Association voiced its support for the announcements, noting that the news is likely to be welcomed by motorists.
However, the group's Spokesman Geoff Dunning said that, because of their size, heavy goods vehicles are unable to take advantage of this reduction because they do not have permission to use the forecourts at supermarkets.
In addition, he noted that the cost of oil has fallen by 12 per cent in the last month, although this is not always reflected by the amount charged by fuel retailers.
Mr Dunning concluded that it is "imperative" the UK sees a fuel cost reduction of 5 pence per litre.
"When the price rises we have no choice but to bite the bullet and pay up. Equally, when the price comes down, we expect to see that reflected at the pump too," he stated.
