Surrey residents campaign for 50 minute rail link to London

Date: 2/4/2013
A residents' association in Surrey is campaigning for the reintroduction of a rail link that would reduce journey times to and from London. The Camberley Society is calling for the restoration of the original route - initially axed in the 1960s - which would enable people to travel between Camberley and Waterloo via Woking in under 50 minutes.
With the current journey taking an estimated one hour and 15 minutes via Ascot, Society Spokesman David Powell explained that cutting travelling times is important to progression - especially as nearby areas currently benefit from quicker links to London.
He added that the campaign has to focus on its 50-minute goal and ensure the Government is aware of the strong desire for the route to be resurrected.
"If there is a good case, with good public support and effective political pressure, we can get the Government to implement it within five years, not withstanding that it is likely to cost upwards of £15 million," he said.
