Sustainable transport scheme 'at risk'

Date: 15/6/2010
A £34 million project designed to promote the use of sustainable transport in Cardiff is in danger of not meeting its goals, Sustrans Wales has warned.Speaking to the BBC, the group's national director Lee Waters said that more needs to be done to educate people about the benefits of sustainable transport.
So far, the council has focussed its efforts on infrastructure rather than education, he suggested.
Mr Waters argued that the key to success is making it simple and convenient for people to use sustainable transport methods.
He said that unless this challenge is addressed, money could be "wasted on expensive infrastructure projects" and that the project may fail.
Delme Bowen, Transport Portfolio Holder at the county hall, told the broadcaster that sustainable transport planning is now more structured that it had been.
Sustrans is continuing in its efforts to further develop the National Cycle Network across Wales.
