Tanzanian police receive new equipment to improve road safety

Date: 29/12/2011

New equipment has been provided to police in Tanzania in a bid to improve road safety in the country.

Puma Energy Tanzania Company has offered video cameras worth Sh30 million (£12,344) to monitor highways, meaning any incidents are caught on film to provide evidence against offenders, the Citizen reports.

Pedestrians, drivers, passengers and cyclists have also been issued with road safety manuals to try and reduce the number of traffic accidents.

General Director at Puma Maregesi Manyama said: "The battle against accidents is everyone's responsibility. Since most of the road calamities are preventable, we need to do everything to ensure that we prevent them."

He added incidents cost the government money, as well as putting lives in danger.

This comes after Rustenburg-based South African football club the Bakwena Platinum Stars joined the United Nations Friends of the Decade of Action for Road Safety initiative.

Team members handed out literature alongside government officials on the Sun City-Ledig road to raise awareness of the matter.
