Date: 30/11/2011
New measures have been announced in the Department for Transport's Logistics Growth Review that will support sustainability in the freight sector. An industry-led taskforce will work with local authorities to encourage the use of low-carbon HGVs in urban areas.
The government will also invest £8 million in the procurement of low-emission HGV technology, while providing operators with guidance on the solutions most suited to their needs.
This news was welcomed by the Freight Transport Association (FTA), which claimed the initiative "provides much-needed impetus."
Chief executive of the organisation Theo de Pencier added the FTA's Logistics Carbon Reduction Scheme "highlights industry's appetite to keep innovating to drive down carbon emissions."
He also said he believes the newly-announced taskforce will help ensure sustainable improvements within the sector make sense both commercially and environmentally.
The FTA previously commented on the government's decision to delay the introduction of increased toll charges on the Dartford Crossing, noting this will reduce the financial pressure currently faced by some commercial vehicle operators.
