Telematics 'can reduce road accidents'

Telematics 'can reduce road accidents'

Date: 8/3/2012

Telematics could be used to reduce accidents on British roads, it has been claimed.

Cobra UK explained that the technology is used to monitor certain parts of a car every time a motorist makes a journey.

These include fuel consumption, average and top speed, cornering, braking and the distance travelled.

Cobra UK Managing Director Andrew Smith said: "The technology encourages safer driving, can help reduce peak time congestion on the UK's roads and can even help reduce accidents across both private and professional drivers."

Furthermore, telematics may lower insurance premiums, as people will be judged on the actual journeys they make instead of their age or gender.

Labour Shadow Transport Minister John Woodcock called for the black box technology to be introduced across the industry ahead of changes that mean female drivers will no longer receive beneficial treatment.

Prime Minister David Cameron recently backed plans to try and reduce the number of whiplash claims in the UK, as it is costing the car insurance industry billions of pounds.
