Temporary solution 'will help keep London flyover open'

Temporary solution 'will help keep London flyover open'

Date: 3/10/2011

Bridge strengthening work is to be carried out on the Hammersmith flyover as part of a temporary solution to the repairs the structure requires.

Transport for London (TfL) reports that the four lane crossing linking the A4 Talgarth Road to the A4 Great West Road, which was built during the 1960s, has been the subject of comprehensive monitoring since 2008.

As a result of this observation, it came to light that repairs will need to be carried out earlier than first anticipated, in particular by reinforcing the spans.

In order to keep closures of the flyover or any traffic disruptions to a minimum, TfL will conduct temporary bridge strengthening work as it considers more permanent solutions.

The main bulk of the project will begin in November and is scheduled to be completed by summer 2012.

Dana Skelley, Director of Roads at TfL, said: "Although the flyover remains safe for road users to use, we are currently developing a temporary solution that will allow it to remain open for the next few years while a permanent solution is delivered."

The flyover is likely to be used by those travelling into the capital for the 2012 Games from Heathrow Airport. TfL has noted that it does not anticipate the planned work to have a significant impact on movement through the city during the event.

The London 2012 website includes a feature designed to help people plan their journeys to the Olympics, whether they are considering arriving by train, tube, coach, car or bus.
