Tenth of Brits 'involved in crash with uninsured drivers'

Tenth of Brits 'involved in crash with uninsured drivers'

Date: 15/4/2011

Around one in ten UK motorists have been involved in a collision with an uninsured motorist, new figures have revealed.

According to data from Direct Line and road safety charity Brake, 3.3 million car owners have been involved in a crash where the other driver did not have motor insurance.

The figures also showed the toll of such collisions, with a quarter of incidents seeing people injured and four per cent resulting in a fatality.

Director of Motor Underwriting at Direct Line Andy Goldby said: "Whilst uninsured drivers cost every honest motorist £30 a year, the real cost is the devastation they cause to other road users' lives. Uninsured drivers not only show disregard for the law but for other people too."

Campaigns Director at Brake Julie Townsend called the numbers "shocking" and pointed out that research shows people who drive without insurance are more likely to be involved in a smash.

In November, Brake will be holding its Road Safety Week, with this year's theme dubbed "Too young to die".
