TfL to continue roll out of air conditioned trains

TfL to continue roll out of air conditioned trains

Date: 16/7/2013

With mercury rising in the capital over the last few weeks, (TfL) Transport for London is helping to cool travellers with the roll out of more air conditioned trains.

The whole of the Metropolitan Line is now air conditioned and TfL is now introducing these trains to the Hammersmith & City Line, with the Circle Line getting them later on in the summer.

By the end of next year, both these lines will be completely air conditioned and come 2016 there will be a total of 191 air conditioned trains, which amounts to 40 per cent of the whole Tube network.

Workers on the London Underground are also carrying out smaller jobs, such as improving ventilation shafts, restoring faulty fan systems and placing portable fans at stations to improve temperatures across the train system.

"The new air conditioned trains have proved a massive success on the Metropolitan line and now customers on the Hammersmith & City are starting to feel the benefits," said Phil Hufton, the London Underground’s Chief Operating Officer.

The biggest challenge with cooling the London Underground is with its deepest lines where the tunnels are so tight that there is no space for air conditioning units.
