TfL underlines economic importance of transport network

Date: 9/5/2013
London's transport network safeguards thousands of jobs throughout the UK and on this basis, it is imperative that the government continues to invest in it.That is according to Transport for London (TfL) Commissioner Sir Peter Hendy, who said its work supported 40,000 jobs outside London.
TfL said, too, that these jobs would be jeopardised if spending cuts were too severe.
Emphasising the economic importance of the industry, TfL said that the population will rise to nine million by 2018 and there will be 2.4 million extra daily trips on public transport by 2031.
It has, therefore, developed a campaign to safeguard spending on major Tube, road and bus projects.
Speaking to the Evening Standard, Sir Peter said: "Our projects will create jobs now and will continue to sustain them. I want the economy to regenerate now and not in 2022.
"Pound for pound, transport investment is more productive in London because it takes them to a more productive job. Those jobs aren't elsewhere in Britain."
