TfL 'accused of wasting £20 million on incomplete projects'

Date: 7/1/2010

Transport for London (TfL) has been accused of wasting £20 million on projects that were cancelled due to the impact of the recession.

According to BBC London, a total of £20 million was spent on step-free access projects at underground stations in 2009.

However, due to the recession the projects were cancelled before completion, leading to accusations of wasting funds.

The stations in question are Amersham, Greenford, Ladbroke Grove, Newbury Park, Osterley and West Kensington, the BBC notes.

London mayor Boris Johnson justified the decision, telling the news service: "Given the pressures on TfL's finances, funds were simply not available to us and we had to take the decision to halt the works."

However, London Assembly member Caroline Pidgeon stated that poor budgeting had led to public money being "totally wasted".

Meanwhile a faulty line on the underground halted trains on the Central line this morning (January 6th), leading to delays.
