TfL staff received £17 million in bonuses

Date: 17/11/2009
Transport for London staff were paid £17 million in bonuses , it was reported today.
Liberal Democrats accused the London mayor of knowing about the bonuses, news of which comes as fares are reported to increase in the new year.
Figures say the £17 million in bonuses were distributed to over 23,000 staff at Transport for London in 2008 and 2009.
The mayor admitted in a written answer that bonus payments rose by 10 per cent in his first year working with Transport for London.
Liberal Democrat leader in the London assembly Mike Tuffrey responded and indicated the senior TfL staff bonuses had risen by 50 per cent.
Mr Tuffrey added that the bonuses were "unjustified" in a year where fares were scheduled to rise more than inflation.
A spokesman for Boris Johnson reportedly said bonuses for senior staff had, in fact, been cut by 10 per cent this year in line with the current economic situation in the country, according to the Guardian.
