The road safety message 'is getting through'

The road safety message 'is getting through'

Date: 20/8/2010

People are beginning to take heed of road safety messages in Wales, it has been suggested.

According to WalesOnline, the number of accidents on the roads in certain parts of the country has halved over the past ten years.

Furthermore, overall road casualties have dropped by 18 per cent since 2006.

Dr Anthony Beresford of Cardiff Business School said there are a number of factors that have contributed to this decline, such as improvements in car design and the positive impact of speed cameras.

"Importantly, I think the general message of road safety to most people is getting through, little by little, inch by inch," he remarked.

The recession could also have contributed to the fall in accidents, Dr Beresford continued, because people have been using their cars less due to restricted personal finances.

A recent survey conducted by Road Safety Analysis concluded children who live in deprived areas are more likely to be injured in a road accident than those from affluent locations.
