Third of Brits 'unsure if they are covered abroad'

Date: 7/6/2011
What level of car insurance is necessary to drive abroad is a subject of confusion to some UK motorists.According to moneysupermarket.com, 32 per cent of Britons think that a fully comprehensive policy will provide them with the same level of cover when hitting the roads in Europe as it does in the UK.
Meanwhile, 23 per cent admit they do not know what level of insurance would protect them.
The website notes that many cover providers will downgrade a fully comprehensive policy automatically when a person uses their car abroad.
Typically, this will be to the minimum level that is required in the country, or even to third party only.
Peter Harrison, Car Insurance Expert at moneysupermarket.com, says: "If your car insurance policy does automatically downgrade, it is worth checking whether your providers will allow you to upgrade or add on European car insurance as an extra."
Insurance is not the only issue drivers could keep in mind when using their car abroad.
Those heading to France should also ensure they carry a high visibility vest, along with a warning triangle, while the use of radar detectors is illegal in the country.
