'Thousands of drivers' test latest green vehicles at EcoVelocity

Date: 19/9/2011

The biggest test drive event ever to take place in the UK was witnessed at EcoVelocity this month.

According to organisers of the green motor show - which ran during the weekend of September 9th - almost 7,000 consumer drives were taken in the electric, low and ultra-low carbon vehicles on display.

A bespoke test track was used to allow visitors to get behind the wheel of a green automobile and experience what it is like to use one.

Meanwhile, Source London - the capital's electric charging network scheme - recorded a three-fold rise in membership numbers while at the show.

The project allows its card holders who have signed up to the initiative for a year to charge their electric vehicle at any of its power points across the city.

Giles Brown, one of the event's organisers, said: "EcoVelocity was a first of its kind; the objective was to raise the profile of the latest low and ultra-low carbon cars by providing a very hands-on environment for visitors."

Mayor of London Boris Johnson officially opened EcoVelocity 2011, where he announced that electric vehicles used during the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games will have a dedicated charging network to make use of, which will later be integrated into Source London, according to Transport for London.
