Thousands of Leicestershire drivers 'jumping red lights'

Date: 29/12/2010

Thousands of drivers in Leicestershire have been caught failing to slow down for a red traffic light, according to new data.

The Leicester Mercury reports that more than 80,000 motorists are known to have jumped a red light over the past year, with road safety experts calling the findings a "major concern."

As a result, Leicester City Council and Leicestershire and Rutland Safety Camera Partnership are discussing plans to expand the current network of speed-detecting cameras, with 12 traffic light cameras currently in use in the city.

Leicester City Council's Head of Road Safety David Poxon said: "It's rather worrying that the number of motorists caught is so high because there is a limited number of cameras."

He added that it was important the message was put across that drivers should stop when they see an amber light displayed, unless it is too wet or icy for them to safely do so.

In related news, Wigan Today recently reported that new road signs are to be introduced in the area to inform motorists of the traffic they will experience on a variety of local routes.
