Thousands register for new bicycle scheme in London

Thousands register for new bicycle scheme in London

Date: 23/7/2010

More than 1,700 people have signed up to use the Barclays Cycle Hire scheme, which opened earlier today (July 23rd).

Individuals can hire the cycles on an annual, weekly or daily basis and once they become a member of the programme they will receive an electronic key that can be used to rent bikes from various locations across the capital.

Mayor of London Boris Johnson said people can take advantage of the initiative, which costs 12p a day.

"This scheme is set to become a new icon of the capital and will enable thousands more people to cycle in our magnificent city," he added.

Anyone who wants to get involved with the project will need to register their details before the campaign goes live on July 30th.

Transport for London recently installed new mirrors at junction in London to boost road safety for cyclists.

The Trixi mirror gives drivers of larger vehicles increased visibility and is designed to cut the number of accidents involving bike riders.
