Traffic control measures in Lagos outlined

Date: 28/6/2012

The measures to be put in force to control traffic in Lagos while major work is being carried out on the Third Mainland Bridge have been outlined.

Obafemi Hamzat, State Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Kayode Opeifa, State Commissioner for Transport and Adeyemi Ibirogba, State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, described the diversions at a press conference.

Mr Opeifa explained that the diversions would be in place between 12 midnight and 12 noon on a daily basis from July 1st.

He said: "In the morning that is between 00:00am and 12:00noon traffic will be diverted for those coming from Lagos Island to the mainland, at Adeniji Adele.

"Motorists are expected to divert to Carter Bridge and thereafter proceed to Iddo where the redistribution will take place."

Diversions will be in place from 12 noon for traffic heading towards Lagos Island from the Anthony Oworoshoki interchange.

The two scenarios have been thought out in order to promote traffic flow and prevent congestion building up while repairs are being carried out on the bridge.

Mr Opeifa said: "We have also examined other roads that would be used during the period and we have structured our strategy towards these roads."

He went on to explain that the last time the bridge was repaired in 2008 a number of the roads to be used in the strategy were not available.

Now, several, including the Agege Motor Road will play a pivotal part, as will Herbert Macaulay, which at the time was still being constructed.

Mr Opeifa said: "Previously, the traffic radio was not available but now it is available to keep residents with information about the traffic situation and guide them on the route to take in the course of carrying out their activities."

Such technology being available will help with communication during the works and allow everyone involved to be kept up to speed on any changes to the plans.

Mr Hamzat asked for all of the residents in Lagos to co-operate with the measures put in place in order to ensure the safety of Nigerians throughout the process.
