Traffic congestion solutions considered for Dumfries

Date: 10/2/2010
Temporary measures are being considered to ease traffic congestion in Dumfries, according to reports. The use of more bus lanes is thought to be an option to tackle the problem.
Additional bus services and stops could also be introduced to cut traffic volumes.
Traffic engineering team leader Russell Wears and sustainable development director Alistair Speedie presented a report to Dumfries councilors proposing this and other potential solutions to alleviate the traffic.
Labour councillors attempted to rule out additional bus lanes but this bid was rejected as future funding could be jeopardised if the move is taken without sufficient evidence to support it.
It is hoped a southern bypass will provide a more long-term solution to the traffic congestion and a group has been set up by Dumfries council to take the case forward.
The bypass would make it easier to get around the town centre and would prompt more investment at the Crichton campus, the Dumfries and Galloway Standard notes.
