Transport concerns over Ipswich residential property development

Date: 20/2/2013
Plans for a major new development to build thousands of homes on the northern fringe of Ipswich are set to be discussed by Councillors amid fears regarding the impact the project could have on the local transport network. As the Ipswich Star reports, Suffolk County Council has highlighted concerns that the town's roads would be unable to cope with increased levels of congestion, while existing residents could be adversely affected by traffic-calming measures that may be needed to facilitate the development.
"We are not convinced that all the transport issues have been adequately dealt with," Cabinet Member Guy McGregor told the Star. "If there are thousands of new homes, there will have to be measures to ensure that people don’t all use their cars at the same time."
Cycle paths and public transport initiatives have been touted as potential solutions, as has the possibility of a bridge being constructed to replace the Westerfield level crossing.
